Bingo, Neven. It blows my mind too.
The thing to remember is that, to a lot of people, Google search is all but magical in its ability to give them relevant results. There’s no such thing as a query. There’s no search algorithm. There’s just a box into which you type what you’re thinking, click a button, and watch as Google turns water into wine.
I don’t believe there’s any feasible way to reverse or prevent this conditioning. It’s the natural outgrowth of having successfully made complex technologies usable without training. It’s the dirty secret of UX design- that the better we do it, the dumber and lazier our users can afford (and are therefore likely) to become.
